It has been reported that gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect attacked Bama, a town 135km from Borno state capital, Maiduguri.
According to Premium Times, the invasion took place in the early hours of Monday.
The casualty figure is still unknown.
There has not been yet an official confirmation from the police or the military.
Vanguard has reported earlier today that there was heavy exchange of gunfire between them and security operatives in Bama.
The residents of the state whose relatives in Bama sent distress calls before dawn said the attackers stormed the town at about 4 a.m.
"Many may have been killed because the attack was launched when the residents were fast asleep," a Maiduguri resident whose relative contacted him from Bama said.
On Tuesday, the Presidency stated that the Nigerian armed forces were up to the task of fully containing the Boko Haram "guerrilla warfare".
