Seven persons were on Saturday paraded at the Oyo state command’s office the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps for being in possession of a severed human head.
The suspects, believed to be Oyo town indigenes, consist of two herbalists, three middle-aged women and two others.
But the suspects claimed the head was “fake” despite a deep cut on it and the fact that it was drenched in fresh blood.
Men of the NCDSC who effected their arrest, also caught with them a coffin, three cars, a calabash, clothes, 16 handsets, charms and other items.
The State Commandant, Shem Obafaiye, who gave further information on how they were apprehended, said after some intelligence gathering, his men rounded up the suspects at Iware area of the state.
The commandant urged parents to monitor the movement of their wards and ensure that the little ones are not sent on errands that would take them too far from home.
According to him, the warning is even more imperative now that the nation is drawing closer to the election period. “We are all Africans,” he said sarcastically.
Reacting to the claim that the head was fake, Mr. Obafaiye said that would be left to the coroners to determine, adding the suspects would be handed over to the police for the next line of action.
The herbalist-leader of the gang, Hamidu Ogunnjimi, admitted to be a fraudster, but insisted that the “fake head” was only a make belief and part of items used to dupe their victims.
“I was in my office when I started hearing gunshots. What you are looking at is not a human head as they claimed, we used cassava flour to mould it. We put blood got from a cow so that it would look as a real human blood. I agree that I am a fraudster and not a ritualist. I have been practising as a herbalist for the past ten years. I don’t kill human beings,” he said.
