President Goodluck Jonathan has noted that Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is still the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The president made the disclosure during the presidential media chat on Monday, stressing that he was only suspended to give room for investigation into the allegation of financial recklessness levelled against him.
He assured that Sanusi will be restored to his position if he is not guilty at the end of the investigation.
Jonathan, however, said he had full powers to suspend Sanusi as the CBN governor.
“Yes, I have absolute power. The CBN is not well defined in the Nigerian Constitution,’’ he said.
According to him, the president has oversight functions over the bank.
The president explained that the suspension was delayed in view of the need to consult widely and not to send a wrong signal.
“When dealing with the treasury of a nation, you have to be careful and consult widely.’’
Details later.
