According to the stakeholders in the water sector, Nigeria is losing around N455b yearly due to poor water, sanitation and hygiene.
The Country Representative of the International water body, WaterAid, Dr. Michael Ojo, claims that water, hygiene and sanitation are vital to every aspect of life and all sustainable development is impossible with no clean water and access to hygiene and sanitation facilities.
According to estimations of Dr.Ojo, there are 63 mln people in Nigeria with no access to safe drinking water and 112 mln without basic access to sanitation. Lack of progress in improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene is acting as a brake on progress in economic and human development particularly in child health, nutrition and education”. – he adds.
Dr.Ojo also said that Nigeria, sadly, is one of the countries with rates of access to sanitation actually dropping, from 37% of population in 1990, to 31% in 2011.
He added that in order to achieve the vision of safe clean water, sanitation and hygiene in Nigeria, will require government, as well as local communities, private sector donors and civil society as well as international development partners to make significant investments.
