Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako, seems to be the man of the moment as a group under the aegis, Save Adamawa State Movement, SASM, on Sunday called for his resignation following the memo sent to the Northern Governors Forum, accusing the president of embarking on genocide in the North- East.
According to the group, right thinking members of the state felt highly insulted with ‘the school boy manner’ the governor read his so called memo.
The group further explained that the call was to prove to Nyako that nobody shared his views on the insurgency or the allegations of genocide he leveled against the present administration.
SASM, in a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting in Abuja, by its National President, Engr. Stephen Albert, pointed out that it has become important for the governor to resign considering the fact that he was indicted by the expanded national security meeting of last week Wednesday, which they claimed brought shame to the state.
The group called on President Goodluck Jonathan to sack Governors of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States, and impose full scale State of Emergency in the states in order for the military to have total control in accomplishing the job at hand without political interference.
Albert, who described Governor Nyako as a disaster, said his indictment was not surprising after living with him for the last eight years.
"We have always known him as a failure from his days in the military, during which General Ibrahim Babangida as military President was forced to promote him from the vibrant office of Chief of Naval Staff to the redundant position of Deputy Chief of Defence Staff. We opposed his choice as governor, when former President Olusegun Obasanjo imposed him on Adamawa State as a form of punishment for the ‘sins’ of his then vice, Atiku Abubakar" the communiqué stated. "As indigenes of Adamawa State, we feel humiliated as a people by the strong words used against our governor by his fellow governors and indeed by everybody that attended the expanded security meeting, including his juniors in the military, like the Minister of Defence, General Aliyu Gusau (rtd.) and the National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki. Mr. Governor, for your fellow governors to have described your memo as written “in bad faith” and described you as an ethnic irredentist is a big shame. Simply put, the verdict of the meeting was clear; please, resign your office".
The group alleged that the paper delivered by Governor Nyako in Washington and the memo he wrote to Northern States Governors’ Forum was meant to position him as the “new Defender-In-Chief” of the north, adding that his intention was to cover up his disastrous years as the state governor.
"Till date, Governor Nyako is yet to commission any project because there is none. He is owing teachers and civil servants which was why in the last WAEC results, of the 31,000 students that sat for the examination, only 1,300 passed. What a shame" the group said. "Just last week in Zamfara State, some uninformed people hailed him as ‘maganin arna’ meaning the solution of unbelievers. This is the dangerous game Governor Nyako has embarked upon. We make bold to declare that it is not enough to chastise Nyako, because he has done some real damage in poisoning the minds of some Northerners against the person of President Jonathan and the vast majority of Nigerians by his utterances and letter. The effect of this will be seen after the 2015 general elections".
SASM called on the EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies to probe the finances of the state government, saying it's the reason for the governor's recent posturing as 'defender of north'.
"The anti-graft agencies should as a matter of urgency probe the finances of the state, especially the Ministry for Local Government where over five billion naira was reportedly spent on the Skills Acquisition Centers and the billion dollar German Specialist Hospital" the group said.
