Anambra State has emerged the overall best in the 2013 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to he official WAEC result, made available to the media, Ghana came first among West African countries, while Anambra State came first among states in Nigeria, followed by Abia, Rivers and Lagos states.
The breakdown of the results show that 12 states in Nigeria recorded percentage that were above national average in the following order; Anambra State (67.85 per cent), Abia State (65.17 per cent), Rivers State (58.56 per cent), Lagos State (56.03), Cross River State (53.34 per cent), Bayelsa State (51.66 per cent), Enugu State (50.22 per cent), Delta State (46.49 per cent), Imo State (46.03per cent), Abuja (43.9 per cent), Ogun (39.92 per cent), and Kaduna (39.47 per cent).
The percentage of the total number of candidates that obtained a minimum of five credits, including English Language and General Mathematics, was 36.57 per cent as against 30.90 per cent and 37.66 per cent for the 2011 and 2012 May/June 2013 WASSCE respectively.
According to WAEC, this result implies that the average performance of the candidates in the May/June 2013 WASSCE was slightly lower than that of the 2012.
Confirming the report, the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Uju Okeke, said this success could be attributed to former governor, Peter Obi’s revolution in the education sector in the state.
