Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) said manager of Super Eagles Stephen Keshi to pick the final list of 23 players after tomorrow’s friendly match against Scotland in London.
Going by Keshi’s own plans, the final 23-man squad won't be revealed until June 2, which is the deadline given by FIFA for all the participating countries to submit their final list.
An anonymous top NFF official said yesterday, May 26, that the proper thing to do is for Keshi to name his squad after the Scotland game since the Eagles won’t play any other friendly or even have any meaningful training outside the London outing before the FIFA deadline of June 2nd.
“We have advised the coach (Keshi) to name his final squad in London. And the reason for this directive is very simple. The match against Scotland is the only one before June 2nd. So there won’t be any other opportunity for him to observe the players after that game. It won’t make economic sense taking the entire team of 30 players to USA only to decamp seven the next day. The Eagles will leave London on the 29th, arrive USA on the 30th and commence training on the 31st, so why take 30 players to USA when we must send the final list to FIFA on the 2nd., two days after arriving USA,” a source stated.
However, it is not clear if Keshi will heed the NFF's directive or jet out to US with his 30 man army of players after playing Scotland.
