Ilorin – Katsina State’s Gov. Ibrahim Shema will sponsor a 30-man delegation of the state under-18 male football team to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, an official said on Monday.
The Katsina State Chairman of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), Alhaji Nasiru Danbaba, disclosed this in a telephone interview.
The team are champions of the first edition of the President Goodluck Jonathan U-18 Football Tourney tagged “Peace Cup’’.
NAN recalls that the tournament was sponsored by Shema, with the host state defeating Kaduna State 1-0 in the final match played at the Old Katsina Township Stadium last year.
“The host governor, Ibrahim Shema, had promised to sponsor the winners to watch the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup matches live. Now, he is going to fulfil his promise,’’ Danbaba said.
He said all arrangements had now been concluded for the trip, adding that members of the 30-man delegation of players and officials have been granted entry visa into Brazil.
“They already have their visa, with their flight scheduled for June 14,’’ the Katsina State YSFON chairman said.
He disclosed further that all the team’s players and officials received a plot of land each from the state government for winning the competition, which was organised by YSFON.
Danbaba said the competition’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), Sheu Hazana, who scored 12 goals in six games, was given two plots of land.
“He was also conferred with the title `Ambassador of Sarkin Fulani’,’’ he said.
The YSFON official commended the Katsina state governor for fulfilling his promises and called on other state governors to borrow a leave from Shema’s gesture.
He disclosed that the state’s under-17 football team also won a national competition and were rewarded by the governor.
“The players got a plot of land each and the sum of two million Naira,’’ Danbaba said.(NAN)
