Former NAFDCA DG, Dora Akunyili who died on June 7 in an India hospital is said to have died of complications arising from uterine cancer, according to Family sources.

According to saharareporters, a family member revealed that the late Minister of Information, Dora Akunyili was completely healthy until she lost the Anambra senatorial election in 2011 to Senator Chris Ngige, stating that the late Dora visited the United States for a routine medical checkup at the end of the legal tussle over the election that's when “Her doctor in America did a hysterectomy and found out that she had a malignant endometrial cancer”.
The source said after the long battle of the disease for two years, the tumor eventually took her life.
Meanwhile another family source revealed that Akunyili received the best treatment after undergoing surgery to remove the tumor, but disclosed that the cancer was of such malignant state that it resisted therapy.
While revealing how the late Mrs Akunyili who accepted to be part of the delegates at the on-going National conference because she was optimistic throughout her illness saying: “She never once believed that she would succumb to the disease. “Instead, she returned to Nigeria determined to fight the disease.”
The other family source also said that, in 1998, Mrs. Akunyili had received a wrong diagnosis of cancer. She was serving then as the Zonal Secretary (Southeast) of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF). “She traveled to the UK then for treatment. Doctors then discovered that she was suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
While saying: “Once she returned to Nigeria, she paid back the money the PTF had given her for treatment. General Muhammadu Buhari was then the leader of PTF. She was in excellent health until last year when her US doctor found that she had malignant endometrial cancer.”

It will be recalled that on June 7, a new report by the Cable News revealed how the late former NAFDAC DG, Dora Akunyili died as a result of misdiagnosis of cancer.
Dora's Akunyili sickness became known to Nigerians after she first stepped out in March at the ongoing National Conference as she had lost so much weight. Being the Optimist that Dora was, she did not allow her sickness stop her from giving her speech at the conference where she represented Anambra state.
