The 2014 ‘Best of Nollywood’ Awards held in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, yesterday night, October 16.
The governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi who hosted the movie practitioners was said to have subtly taken a swipe at Nollywood actors and actresses saying they went into acting for lack of job opportunity.
Speaking at the event which held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Port Harcourt, Amaechi said Nollywood’s pivotal role in the nation’s economy had made it possible for some actors and actresses that could not find employment in their fields of study to be gainfully employed, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
“Most people went into acting because of unemployment, and Nollywood is a hero for providing work for a large number of Nigerians and helping us tell our own stories. You owe the Nigerian society the job to continue to be our hero and this time around you have to help force change in the country.
“You people in Nollywood are products of circumstances/necessity. You actors study sciences, law, medicine, accounting and all sorts but because you couldn’t find jobs, you embraced Nollywood. The only reason you are in Nollywood is because you couldn’t find other jobs, if you had, would you be in Nollywood today ” Rotimi jokingly said.
The event was graced by Liz Benson, Kenneth Okonkwo, Shola Sobowale, Desmond Elliot, Moses Inwang, Dickson Iroegbu, Bob-Manuel Udokwu, Patience Ozokwor, Elvis Chuks, AY, Iyabo Ojo, Emem Isong and a host of others.
