LAGOS—Lagos State Government yesterday said the state would require at least 5,000 megawatts of electricity to address the acute power shortage in the state.
Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Taofeek Tijani at briefing, lamented that the current power supply to the state was far below the power needed by 21 million residents of in the state.

Tijani insisted that out of the 1,000 megawatts claimed to be supplied to the state from the national grid, unspecified percent was shared with neighbouring state.
He explained that the 5, 000 megawatts of electricity needed in the state, was the outcome of the power audit recently conducted by the state government to ascertain the power needs in the state.

According to him, “Lagos requires 5,000 megawatts of electricity; the total national generating capacity at present is about 4, 000 megawatts. The state is only allocated 1,000 megawatts. So, there is a huge deficit in the state.”
The commissioner noted that the shortfall was the reason behind the state government investment in the construction of Independent Power Project, IPPs in the state and other strategic steps to gradually address the huge deficit,
