The United States on Thursday, chastised the government of Nigeria for being too slow in finding a lasting solution to the Boko Haram menace.
U.S president Barack Obama
Alice Friend, the Pentagon’s principal director for African Affairs told the U.S. Senate subcommittee that Nigeria has failed to mount an effective campaign against Boko Haram and has also failed to curb the extremist who have killed thousands and destroyed properties.
Ms Friend also condemned the spate of abuses by Nigerian security forces in the fight against Boko Haram.
She however said that despite Nigeria’s failing in dealing with Boko Haram, the United States will help assist the country in the fight against the insurgents, adding that they are now committed to helping fight the al Qaeda-linked group and safely return over 250 school girls who were abducted by the sect on April 14.
Another senior official, the acting Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Robert Jackson, explained that the U.S. has been urging Nigeria to change its approach to Boko Haram.
"When soldiers destroy towns, kill civilians and detain innocent people with impunity, mistrust takes root," Mr. Jackson was quoted as saying.
